I've been meaning to write another music post, but I've been so busy recently that I haven't been able to keep up with new releases let alone decide what stuff I like enough to write about. But today is a lazy Sunday and my boyfriend is angrily watching the football (QPR don't seem to be doing too well...) so I'm grateful for the opportunity to plug my headphones in and listen to some music.
First up is an artist who hasn't managed to break into the mainstream yet (although I swear I heard one of Jedward reference her once on Alan Carr's Chatty Man...) I don't remember when I first came across her music, but am tempted to say it was back in the days of MySpace. Her name is Sky Ferreira. Although I could recommend tonnes of her music to you, simply because Sky doesn't make any bad music, I'm picking 'Lost In My Bedroom' from her recently released EP Ghost.
I heard a clip of this song on her soundcloud account months ago & loved it instantly. Her echoing voice above the pumping beat is constantly stuck in my head. I'm a big fan of Sky and it frustrates me to no end that I can't buy her music on iTunes in this country, forcing me to get her music by... other methods. Anyway, I think it's just a matter of time until she has a breakthrough & I suggest you check out her discography because her music catalogue is diverse enough for everybody (even some for you little indie kids!).
My next pick is No Doubt's 'Looking Hot'. The video to this song has been at the centre of controversy since it was released, and since removed from their YouTube page. I find it hard to see what is so offensive about the video, but who am I to judge. I've found the video elsewhere, so have a look and listen below! (Before it gets taken down...)
I had problems watching the video when it was embedded, so if you are too you can watch it here. They were this weeks mentors on the UK X Factor, and are set to perform on the results show later tonight. So in light of the whole scandal with the 'Looking Hot' video, it'll be interesting to see if they perform 'Settle Down' instead.
When there is a lot of hype around an artist I tend to shy away from them and ignore everybody raving about them, because I am too arrogant to follow along like a sheep. I was the same with Lana Del Rey when I first started hearing about her, and it wasn't until I watched her phenomenal 'National Anthem' video that I was converted. Her re-released album Born To Die: The Paradise Edition has her current single & my next pick 'Ride'. I've been humming this song to myself everywhere, and I first heard it when I was at my friends house having a couple of drinks and all I remember is the line 'I'm tired of feeling like I'm fucking crazy, I'm tired of driving 'til I see stars in my eyes' slapping me in the face and sticking with me. The way she delivers the line sounds so.... desperate. It's chilling, and it fits the character in the video perfectly. This is without a doubt her greatest piece yet and the other tracks on the re-release are flaw-free too.
Those who don't care for the movie sequence can skip to 3:25 for the song, but I recommend you do because the whole thing is beautiful and gives me goosebumps.
Next up is a collaboration by an artist that most people will scoff at, but I promise if you get off the hate bandwagon for a minute you will see that this is actually a good, fun track and the video isn't actually too bad either. (And if you can't get off the bandwagon, there is a spoof video by BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw.) Anyway, the track is 'Beauty and A Beat' by Justin Bieber, featuring another current favourite of mine Nicki Minaj (if you didn't see her on Alan Carr's Chatty Man, you need to.)
Last up (assuming you're still here...!) is yet another track by P!nk. If you haven't bought her album The Truth About Love, then you really ought to because it's brilliant. Her current single is 'Try' and you can watch the very good video for that here, but I'm going to talk about the fun album track 'Walk of Shame'.
If this isn't a single her management should be jailed for crimes against humanity. The song is fun, catchy and radio ready. The video would be brilliant too, although P!nk has been adding an extra layer to her singles with her videos so she could add a different angle to the song as opposed to a one night stand anthem. Either way, I don't really care and would love to hear this blasting on Gaydar radio as I'm driving around :P
That's all this time! If you enjoy the tracks or have any recommendations for me, please let me know @ArrrnBoyle! Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, I'm going to go watch the rest of Come Dine With Me!
Thanks for reading!
